The Protector of Devotees
Lord Nrisimhadeva appeared to save Prahlada Maharaja, a
five-year-old boy who was being tortured by his atheistic father,
Hiranyakashipu. The Lord appears with two purposes: Paritranaya
sadhunam (to protect the devotees) and vinasaya ca dushkritam
(to kill the demons).
This incarnation proves that the Lord's intelligence
always surpasses the cunning plans of materialistic people. While Hiranyakashipu
tried to "cheat" death through indirect definitions in his benedictions, the
Lord kept every word of Brahma's blessing intact while still delivering justice.
A Message for Humanity
No matter how much we advance in scientific
knowledge or medicine, the four principles of material existence—birth, death,
old age, and disease—cannot be escaped. Our only real shelter is the lotus feet
of the Lord.
Surpassing the Demon's Logic
The Junction of Opposites
Hiranyakashipu asked not to be killed by
man or beast; the Lord appeared as half-man, half-lion. He asked not to
be killed by day or night; the Lord appeared at twilight.
Intact Benedictions
He asked not to be killed on land, sea, or
air; the Lord killed him on His lap. He asked not to be killed by
weapons; the Lord used His nails.
When the angry father asked his son if God was in the
pillar of the palace, Prahlada replied "Yes." When the demon struck the pillar, the
Supreme Lord burst forth with a terrifying roar to reclaim His devotee.
The Nine Types of Devotional Service
Prahlada Maharaja taught the nava-lakshana
bhakti (nine-fold process) to his father, declaring it the best thing he
had learned:
3.
Smaranam (Remembering)
4.
Pada-sevanam (Service)
9.
Atma-nivedanam (Surrender)

who have assumed the form of half-man, half-lion! All glories to You! Just as one
can easily crush a wasp between one’s fingernails, so the body of the wasp-like
demon Hiranyakashipu has been ripped apart by the wonderful pointed nails on Your
beautiful lotus hands."
